Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of the sandwich generation in the film Home Sweet Loan using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis. The sandwich generation refers to someone who is responsible for two generations, namely parents and other family members, so that they experience emotional and financial pressure, and have limitations in thinking for themselves. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative with Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis techniques that include three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The results of the study show that the character named Kaluna in this film harmoniously represents the sandwich generation who must be responsible for two generations, both emotionally, financially and socially. The semiotic analysis in this film also shows that Kaluna is an individual who is shackled by social myths in the traditional family structure, such as a good child is a child who is always obedient, family is the main priority, and must help other families who are already married. This certainly becomes an ideological mechanism that restricts the welfare and freedom of individuals within the family structure. This study shows that visual media such as films can be a reflection and reinforcement of social reality regarding the dynamics of the sandwich generation in modern society. The concept of the sandwich generation in this study is limited to individuals experiencing emotional and financial stress, individuals responsible for their parents and other family members who still live under the same roof, and individuals who have little time for themselves.
