Abstract

The Sriwedari Gedung Wayang Orang (GWO) in Surakarta is a historic building and center for traditional Wayang Orang performances that have high cultural value. However, the current condition of the GWO and its surrounding area has seen a decline in functionality and physical quality, threatening the preservation of Wayang Orang and the quality of public spaces in Sriwedari Park. Revitalization is necessary to restore the vitality of the GWO, enhance public appreciation, and create a better environment. This research and design aim to produce a comprehensive revitalization design for the GWO Sriwedari area using a Contemplative Architecture approach, capable of optimizing functions for Wayang Orang activities, improving physical quality and public spaces, applying contemplative principles that support reflection and appreciation of art, niche tourism, and contributing to the preservation and development of Wayang Orang. The research method used is mixed methods, including literature review and evaluation of existing conditions through observation, interviews, and post-occupancy evaluation. This design includes physical improvements and restoration of the GWO, the application of contemplative design principles through the processing of sensory elements, and consideration of sustainability and architectural identity aspects, resulting in a high-quality, meaningful, and sustainable Wayang Orang cultural center.
