Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relevance and irrelevance of Karl Marx's thought in the city of Surakarta. As well as examining the historical development of ideological upheaval and the role of workers in making changes in the social conditions in the city of Surakarta. In addition, this study looks from a status quo perspective about the relevance of the current state of workers in the city of Surakarta. Because there are still many workers who have not found work, the level of wages is relatively low, working hours are longer than standard, and social inequality is very obvious in the city of Surakarta. This study uses library research where researchers use data sources from available literature such as journals and data available in the Surakarta city government block which is then analyzed descriptively qualitatively. The results of the study show that Marxist thought initiated by Karl Marx is still relevant and on the other hand the socio-cultural development of the city of Surakarta in the past is closely related to the resistance of workers against factory owners or sugar cane industries, tobacco, batik trade and many conditions based on the understanding or ideology that developed rapidly in this city. The lack of interest in literacy and the scarcity of classroom instruction on this phenomenon have made the public skeptical and antipathetic toward past labor unrest and resistance. Consequently, the current phenomenon demonstrates a submissive attitude toward the oppression of workers in Surakarta. Therefore, education, a sound bureaucracy, and balanced wages and working hours should be key priorities for the well-being and prosperity of the Surakarta community.
