Abstract

Family caregivers play multiple roles in caring for individuals with schizophrenia, including assisting with daily activities, personal care, and managing unpredictable behaviors such as aggression and violence. These responsibilities often lead to caregiver burden. Approximately 83% to 95% of caregivers report a decline in quality of life and increased risks to both their own health and that of the patient. This secondary research aims to identify the level of burden experienced by family caregivers and the factors influencing it in the context of schizophrenia care. Literature was collected from the databases PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect. The search was limited to English articles, full texts, and publications from 2022 to 2025. A review of nine studies showed that family caregivers of individuals with schizophrenia generally experience moderate to severe levels of caregiver burden. Objective burden (such as financial strain and time commitment) was found to be higher than subjective burden (such as emotional stress). Factors influencing caregiver burden include gender, age, education level, socioeconomic status, psychoactive substance use, employment, duration of the patient's illness, family functioning, and the caregiver's level of hope regarding the patient’s recovery.
