Abstract

Elderly are a group that experiences degenerative processes, including cognitive decline. This decline impacts the quality of life of elderly and can affect their independence and social interactions. One factor believed to slow cognitive decline is family support. This study aims to determine the relationship between family support and cognitive function in the elderly. This was a quantitative study with a correlational design and cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 99 elderly participants selected through total sampling. Instruments used were the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) to assess cognitive function and the Family Support Scale (FSS) to assess family support. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate tests. The Spearman Rank test was used due to non-normally distributed data. The majority of respondents (57.6%) had high family support, and 50.5% had normal cognitive function. The Spearman Rank test showed no statistically significant relationship between family support and cognitive function (r = 0.143; p = 0.164). However, the positive correlation direction indicates that higher family support tends to be associated with better cognitive outcomes.
