Abstract

Sea turtles are endangered species that play a vital role in maintaining coastal ecosystem balance. Pancer Door Beach in Pacitan, one of the turtle nesting sites, faces serious threats from human activity, pollution, and unregulated tourism development. The Sahabat Penyu Pacitan Community actively contributes to conservation efforts through hatchling rescue, education, and collaboration, yet they face limitations in infrastructure and resources. The main issues lie in the lack of supportive facilities for optimal conservation and the community’s low awareness of turtle preservation. This design project aims to develop a community-based sea turtle conservation center that applies sustainable architecture principles to enhance habitat protection and empower local communities. The design concept integrates sustainable architectural approaches by considering coastal ecosystems, using environmentally friendly materials, and implementing lighting systems that do not disturb the turtles' natural nesting behavior. The design process involved literature studies, field observations, interviews, and macro and micro site analyses. The result is a conservation complex that serves not only as a protection center for turtles but also as an educational hub, ecotourism destination, and platform for community empowerment. Through this approach, turtle conservation is expected to be more sustainable while also delivering ecological, social, and economic benefits to the surrounding community.
