Abstract

This research aims to analyze the representation of romanticism in the film The Architecture of Love using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The film tells the emotional journey of a writer named Raia, who seeks inspiration and the meaning of love after a failed marriage, and her interactions with River, a mysterious architect in New York. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method with purposive sampling of scenes that highlight the dynamics of the romantic relationship between the main characters. The analysis focuses on visual and verbal signs representing love, examining aspects of denotation, connotation, and underlying myths. The results show that the film represents romanticism not only through narrative and dialogue but also through the symbolism of architecture and space, enriching the meaning of the characters' relationships. Barthes' semiotic approach reveals hidden layers of meaning behind the representation of love in the film, providing a deeper understanding of how romanticism is constructed in popular media.
