Abstract

This study aims to determine how audiences perceive the patriarchal culture depicted in the Merajut Dendam series. This research is important to provide a new perspective on how viewers respond to films that raise gender issues, particularly patriarchy. The researcher applied a descriptive qualitative approach with Stuart Hall's reception analysis through the encoding and decoding model. Data collection techniques involved interviews with five informants selected based on specific criteria. The results of the study revealed three positions of meaning: dominant, negotiation, and opposition. Of these three positions, the opposition position was dominant, with most informants rejecting narratives that place women in subordinate positions. In the negotiation position, informants did not fully accept or reject messages containing patriarchal content. Meanwhile, the dominant position reflects full acceptance of the patriarchal aspects in the Merajut Dendam series. These differences in acceptance are influenced by the individual experiences, family, religion, social and cultural backgrounds, and media consumption of each informant. Additionally, gender and marital status also influence the informants' perspectives.
