Abstract

The widespread use of social media presents challenges, one of which is the phenomenon of self-diagnosis due to a lack of proper education about mental health and misleading information from social media. This study aims to determine the influence of social media content perceptions regarding mental health and mental health literacy on the level of self-diagnosis among Gen Z students. The study employs a quantitative design with a multiple linear regression approach. The research sample consists of 176 students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), selected using a criterion random sampling technique. Data collection was conducted using a survey with a 4-scale questionnaire. The results indicate that both social media content perceptions regarding mental health and mental health literacy have a significant simultaneous impact on self-diagnosis behavior in Gen Z. Partially, social media content perceptions show a significant positive influence on self-diagnosis, while mental health literacy has a significant negative impact on self-diagnosis. This study underscores the importance of improving mental health literacy to reduce the tendency for self-diagnosis, as well as the need for greater awareness of the potential risks associated with relying on unverified information from social media. The implications of this research suggest that mental health education programs should be integrated into university curricula to enhance students' ability to critically evaluate health information encountered online.
