Abstract
Narrative texts in Indonesian language lessons are student compositions that often contain errors, as students tend to write using their own language without paying attention to spelling rules. The aim of this study is to identify the types of spelling errors in the narrative texts written by students of SMK Negeri 4 Surakarta. This research is a qualitative study using a descriptive method. The primary data in this study are documents in the form of narrative texts written by Grade X Culinary students of SMK Negeri 4 Surakarta. The secondary data include information from the Indonesian language teacher and previous research related to the same topic. The data sources were obtained from the narrative compositions of Grade X Culinary students at SMK Negeri 4 Surakarta. The data collection techniques used were document analysis and literature study. The data analysis technique in this study followed five stages based on the error analysis method proposed by Ellis: collecting samples of errors, identifying the errors, describing the errors, classifying the errors, and evaluating the errors. The results of the study show that out of 21 data samples, there were 22 spelling errors in Indonesian, consisting of 11 errors in the use of capital letters and 11 errors in the use of punctuation marks. There are four efforts to improve students' understanding of Indonesian spelling, namely Improving Understanding of Spelling Rules through Intensive Learning, Routine Writing Practice, Providing Constructive Feedback, Using Interactive Learning Media, and Developing Reading Habits. Through direct guidance and continuous practice from teachers, it is hoped that this will significantly improve students' spelling abilities.
