Abstract

Most poultry farmers in Indonesia still rely on conventional methods for feeding chickens, monitoring ambient temperature, and checking remaining feed levels in the storage container. These methods present several limitations, including labor dependency, delayed feeding times, and lack of accurate environmental monitoring. This study aims to design and develop a prototype of an automated chicken feeding system in battery cages, integrated with IoT-based temperature and feed level monitoring. The system uses an ESP32 microcontroller as the central controller, a DHT22 sensor for temperature monitoring, and an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor for detecting remaining feed height. An RTC DS3231 module is implemented to control the feeding schedule automatically. Feed distribution is managed using a DC motor with an encoder and a servo motor that opens and closes the feed gate. The system interface includes a Telegram Bot for real-time remote control and monitoring, and a 16x2 I2C LCD for local display. The research methodology involves literature review, system design, hardware and software implementation, functional testing, and performance analysis. Test results show that all components work reliably and in synchronization. The average measurement error was 1.006% for the temperature sensor, 2.78% for the feed level sensor, 3.38% for motor positioning, and 1.56% for feed output. These results indicate that the system is effective in improving operational efficiency while minimizing human error. It offers a practical and economical solution for small- to medium-scale poultry farming and demonstrates the potential of IoT technology in supporting automation in agricultural applications.
