Abstract

Speaking is one of the skills that is important for students to master; therefore, there is speaking practice in the class. The data sources are the students of SMA N 1 Sukoharjo. In this study, the researcher collected data through interviews and a questionnaire. This research would apply the Miles, M. B., & Huberman (1994) model to analyze the data through steps, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. In order to obtain valid data, the researcher applied triangulation of information sources. The results of the research are 1) the factors that influence the student’s speaking performance are internal factors that consist of confidence, motivation, and exposure. And the external factor consists of the teacher’s teaching method, learning environment, and direct practice. 2) The challenges faced by the students of SMA N 1 Sukoharjo are linguistic challenges that consist of limited mastery of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. And non-linguistic challenges consist of low self-confidence, fear of making mistakes, and anxiety about criticism. 3) The student’s strategy to overcome the challenges involves personal effort and communicative techniques such as using non-verbal clues, role-playing in class, and joining English clubs.
