Abstract
A Wind Power Plant (PLTB) is one of the renewable energy solutions that utilizes wind energy to generate electricity. As an archipelagic country, Indonesia possesses significant wind energy potential for PLTB development. Based on this potential, the present study aims to design and compare the performance of two types of vertical-axis wind turbines Savonius and H-type Darrieus in generating electricity under low wind speed conditions. The research was conducted at Parangtritis Beach, Yogyakarta, which is characterized by low wind speeds and varying wind directions. The methodology involved initial wind speed data collection, literature review, design, and experimental testing of the PLTB system under both load and no-load conditions. The performance parameters analyzed include rotational speed (RPM), voltage (V), current (A), and generated power (W). The performance comparison indicates that the Savonius turbine demonstrates superior self-starting ability, as it can rotate and generate voltage at lower wind speeds compared to the H-type Darrieus turbine. The Savonius was able to start rotating at wind speeds below 2.0 m/s and produced voltage up to 21.8 V at 68 RPM, whereas the Darrieus began operating effectively only above 2.8 m/s, with a maximum voltage output of 17.0 V at 49 RPM. Under load conditions, the Savonius turbine began generating current at approximately 4.11 m/s, reaching 12.5 V, 0.22 A, and 2.75 W at a wind speed of 5.70 m/s. In contrast, the H-type Darrieus turbine only generated up to 8.2 V at 5.53 m/s, but failed to deliver current, resulting in zero power output due to insufficient voltage to surpass the battery threshold. Therefore, the Savonius turbine is considered more suitable for application in areas with low wind speeds, owing to its better performance in converting wind kinetic energy into electrical energy.
