Abstract

Education is not solely aimed at transmitting knowledge, but also focuses on developing students’ superior personal character. This includes cultivating critical thinking skills, integrity, self-control, and a strong sense of responsibility. Humanistic education plays a vital role in shaping such character, as it emphasizes holistic individual development encompassing cognitive, affective, and moral aspects. This study aims to describe the efforts of educators in implementing humanism-based education, as well as to identify the factors contributing to its failure—particularly those leading to a decline in student discipline and character development. Furthermore, the study seeks to explore how the optimization of humanistic education can contribute to shaping critical character without compromising discipline and responsibility among students at Ma’had Darul Fikri, Bringin, Kauman, Ponorogo. The research employs a qualitative approach, with a primary focus on investigating both deductive and inductive reasoning processes. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that the implementation of humanistic education at Ma’had Darul Fikri has been structured through dialogical approaches in formal education, character strengthening through non-formal activities, and a reflective discipline system. However, challenges remain, such as the misinterpretation of freedom, limited understanding among educators, authoritarian cultural backgrounds, and institutional policies that are not fully aligned with humanistic values. Therefore, optimization is necessary through continuous teacher training, educational reward systems, personalized mentoring, and the reformulation of value-based institutional policies.
