Abstract
This study aims to investigate the effect of immersion time variation on the hydrophobic properties and surface morphology of AISI 316 stainless steel coated with Ni-Zn and Zn-Ni using the electroplating method. AISI 316 was selected due to its high corrosion resistance, particularly in chloride-containing environments. Electroplating was performed using zinc and nickel electrodes with a constant current of 5 amperes and immersion times of 15 and 25 minutes. The electrolyte solution consisted of various chemical compounds including nickel sulfate, zinc sulfate, sodium sulfate, boric acid, and sulfuric acid. Hydrophobicity was evaluated by measuring the water contact angle using the droplet method, while surface morphology and elemental composition were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). The results demonstrated that increased immersion time significantly affected the contact angle, indicating enhanced hydrophobicity. Moreover, surface morphology appeared denser and more uniform, with a higher concentration of coating elements, particularly Zn and Ni as confirmed by EDS. This study provides valuable insights for optimizing electroplating processes to produce metallic surfaces with superior hydrophobicity for various industrial and engineering applications.
