Abstract

In the metal casting industry, we often hear a type of cast iron called white cast iron. White cast iron is a type of cast iron that does not have graphite so that it has very hard but brittle mechanical properties. This study was conducted to determine the effect of annealing at a temperature of 850 ° C with a holding time of 20 minutes on the microstructure, chemical composition of the phase, and toughness of white cast iron. Metallographic testing and phase composition testing were carried out using the Scanning Electron Microscope - Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), while toughness testing was carried out using the Charpy impact method. The results of the SEM-EDS test showed that in the white cast iron that had undergone the annealing process there were cementite (Fe3C), pearlite, and graphite phases. In the cementite phase there were Fe (Ferro) elements of 54,790% atoms, C (Carbon) elements of 44,086% atoms, and Chromium (Cr) elements of 1,124% atoms. Then in the pearlite phase there is an Fe (Ferro) element of 58.142% atoms, a C (Carbon) element of 39.974% atoms, and a Si (Silicon) element of 1.884% atoms. And in the graphite phase there is an C (Carbon) element of 55.989% atoms, an O (Oxygen) element of 34.064% atoms, Fe (Ferro) of 9.822% atoms, and Si (Silicon) of 0.126% atoms. The results of the toughness test show that the highest impact energy value and impact price value occur in white cast iron specimens that have been subjected to annealing heat treatment with an average impact energy value of 5.6 joules and an average impact value of 0.0694042 joules/mm2. Meanwhile, the lowest impact energy and impact price values occurred in the raw material white cast iron specimen with an average impact energy value of 4.3 joules and an average impact value of 0.0534272 joules/mm2.
