Abstract

This research departs from the phenomenon of increasing aggressive behavior among adolescents which indicates dynamics in interpersonal relationships and individual emotional aspects. The purpose of this study was to examine whether there is a relationship between parental attachment and emotional intelligence and aggressiveness in adolescents. The research participants consisted of 140 public junior high school students in Surakarta City, who were selected using a multistage random sampling technique from five schools representing each sub-district, with an age range of 12–15 years and a balanced gender composition. This study uses a correlational quantitative approach. The data collection instruments are in the form of the parental attachment scale, the emotional intelligence scale, and the aggressiveness scale, which have gone through validity and reliability tests. Data analysis was carried out using multiple linear regression techniques. The results showed that parental attachment and emotional intelligence together had a significant effect on aggressiveness (R² = 0.379), with emotional intelligence making a greater effective contribution (24.5%) than parental attachment (13.42%). In addition, the results of the minor hypothesis test revealed a significant and positive relationship between parental attachment (r = 0.452; p < 0.001) and emotional intelligence (r = 0.549; p < 0.001) and aggressiveness, which was not in accordance with the researchers' initial assumptions. These findings suggest that parental attachment and emotional intelligence do not necessarily correlate with a decrease in aggressive behavior. The practical implications relate to the need for an interventional approach that considers the context of adolescent social relations
