Abstract
The metal casting industry faces challenges in improving production efficiency, dimensional accuracy, and the utilization of environmentally friendly materials. This study aims to evaluate the effect of 3D printing on the dimensional accuracy and mechanical properties of sand castings using aluminum brake lining waste as raw material. The patterns were printed using a PLA-based FDM 3D printer and then used in the sand casting process. The cast products were tested using a CMM to measure dimensions, a Rockwell hardness tester to measure hardness, and microstructure and composition were observed using SEM-EDS. The main parameters observed included dimensional deviations from the CAD design, hardness values in several product areas, and the distribution of Al-Si phases and other metal contaminants. The results show that 3D printing patterns are capable of creating precise dimensions within tolerances. The aluminum waste provides a reasonable hardness value, although the presence of intermetallic phases can affect the material's ductility. This approach offers an efficient and sustainable solution for the recycled metal-based automotive industry.
