Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of annealing treatment and the formation of Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coatings using the Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposition (PCVD) method on the microstructure and surface hardness of AISI 410 stainless steel. The annealing process was carried out at a temperature of 900°C for 30 minutes with furnace cooling to enhance the toughness of the material. After annealing, the samples were surface-treated with a DLC coating at varying pressures of 1.2, 1.4, and 1.6 mbar. The microstructure was observed using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and the coating thickness was measured for each pressure variation. Meanwhile, hardness testing was conducted using the Rockwell C scale (HRC) in accordance with ASTM E18 standards. The results showed that the annealing treatment produced a microstructure consisting of ferrite and pearlite phases and reduced the material's hardness. The formation of the DLC layer via the PCVD process showed an increase in coating thickness with increasing pressure, with average thicknesses of 15.55 µm (1.2 mbar), 16.43 µm (1.4 mbar), and 18.23 µm (1.6 mbar). The increase in PCVD pressure also contributed to the improvement in surface hardness of AISI 410 steel, with the highest hardness observed at 1.6 mbar. Thus, the combination of annealing treatment and DLC coating can enhance the hardness and surface performance of the material.
