Abstract

The decline in the character of the younger generation within modern educational systems reflects the weakened role of education in shaping holistic human beings spiritually, morally, and socially. KH. Ahmad Dahlan and Buya Hamka are two prominent Islamic educational reformers in Indonesia who proposed educational concepts that go beyond mere cognitive orientation by integrating affective and spiritual dimensions. This study aims to describe the Islamic educational concepts of KH. Ahmad Dahlan and Buya Hamka, analyze their similarities and differences, and examine the relevance of their thoughts in light of humanistic educational theory. The humanistic theory is chosen as the analytical framework because it offers a philosophical foundation emphasizing self-actualization, meaningful learning, and the strengthening of values such as empathy, responsibility, integrity, and self-development essential for character and spiritual formation. This research employs a qualitative paradigm with a library research method and a philosophical approach. Data were gathered from primary and secondary sources and analyzed descriptively and comparatively. The findings indicate that KH. Ahmad Dahlan emphasized the integration of religious and secular knowledge and promoted education oriented toward social action, while Buya Hamka emphasized the formation of al-insān al-kāmil through an approach that encompasses spiritual, moral, and intellectual dimensions. Both figures demonstrate conceptual alignment with the humanistic approach, which advocates for the holistic development of the human being. The study concludes that the educational thought of KH. Ahmad Dahlan and Buya Hamka is highly relevant for implementation in modern education systems, particularly in reinforcing character and spiritual education. Therefore, it is recommended that the educational values advanced by these two figures be integrated into the national curriculum.
