Abstract
Beauty is an important aspect for women and often becomes part of their identity. However, the physical beauty standards shaped by social media create pressure for women, influencing the way they perceive their own bodies. This study aims to examine the relationship between perceptions of beauty standards and social comparison on self-objectification behavior among female Psychology students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. The population in this study consists of female Psychology students at UMS from the 2021–2024 cohorts who use social media, particularly Instagram. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, with a total of 136 respondents. This research employed a quantitative method with data collection through a Likert scale. The results showed a significant relationship between the perception of beauty standards and self-objectification (0.000 < 0.05), as well as a significant relationship between social comparison and self-objectification (0.030 < 0.05). Furthermore, simultaneously, both independent variables had a significant relationship with self-objectification (0.000 < 0.05). Thus, the higher the perception of beauty standards and social comparison, the higher the tendency for self-objectification among female students.
