Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of annealing treatment and the formation of Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating using the Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposition (PCVD) method on the microstructure and surface hardness of AISI 410 stainless steel. The annealing process was carried out at a temperature of 900°C for 30 minutes, followed by furnace cooling to improve the toughness of the material. After annealing, the samples underwent a surface treatment using DLC coating with pressure variations of 1.0, 1.2, and 1.4 mbar. The microstructure was observed using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and the coating thickness was measured for each pressure variation. Meanwhile, hardness testing was conducted using the Rockwell scale C (HRC) method in accordance with ASTM E18 standards. The results showed that annealing produced a microstructure consisting of ferrite and pearlite phases and decreased the material's hardness. The formation of DLC coatings through the PCVD process showed an increase in coating thickness with increasing pressure, with average thicknesses of 10.33 µm (1.0 mbar), 15.55 µm (1.2 mbar), and 16.43 µm (1.4 mbar), respectively. Increasing the PCVD pressure also had a positive effect on the surface hardness of AISI 410 steel, with the highest hardness achieved at 1.4 mbar pressure. Therefore, the combination of annealing treatment and DLC coating effectively enhances the hardness and surface performance of the material.
