Abstract

The retaining wall constructed in the Putri Cempo area, Mojosongo Village, Surakarta City, was designed to address the potential for slope failure behind the structure. To ensure slope stability in the area adjacent to the river, a retaining wall structure of the L-Gutter type was built, equipped with an alternative reinforcement using pile foundations. This study aims to evaluate the Safety Factor (SF) of the retaining wall through manual analysis compared with simulation results using Geo5 software, as well as to redesign the structure based on the SNI 8460-2017 standard. Analysis of the existing conditions without pile foundation reinforcement indicates an “Unsafe” status: for overturning with SF = 1.106 ≤ 1.5, for sliding with SF = 0.725 ≤ 2, and for bearing capacity with actual eccentricity e = 14.78 ≥ 3. The results from the Geo5 software calculation also show an “Unsafe” condition: overturning SF = 0.60 ≤ 1.5, sliding stability SF = 0.66 ≤ 1.5, and bearing capacity with e = 0.00 ≤ 1.5.Based on this evaluation, both the manual and software analyses confirm that the existing condition is Unsafe, and a redesign is required according to SNI 8460-2017. The redesign involves increasing the base width of the retaining wall from 1.25 m to 4.27 m. With this modification, the following safety factors were obtained Overturning stability: manual calculation SF = 1.98 ≥ 1.5 (Safe), Geo5 SF = 4.62 ≥ 1.5 (Safe), Sliding stability: manual calculation SF = 1.94 ≥ 1.5 (Safe), Geo5 SF = 2.25 ≥ 1.5 (Safe), Bearing capacity: manual calculation SF = 4.94 ≥ 3 (Safe), Geo5 SF = 3.07 ≥ 3 (Safe), These results demonstrate that the L-Gutter type retaining wall, even without pile foundation reinforcement, is capable of withstanding both traffic loads and lateral earth pressure when properly redesigned.
