Abstract
The population of Java Island continues to increase each year, leading to urbanization and the growth of cities across the region. This study aims to (1) analyze the population growth of cities in Java, and (2) examine the spatial distribution of urban growth on the island. The research uses a quantitative method with descriptive analysis techniques to explain the phenomena based on population growth data and city development in Java. The primary variable used to assess urban growth is the total population, based on census data published by BPS for the years 2013 and 2023. The results of the study show that (1) there was an overall population increase of 5.87%, from 32,634,120 people in 2013 to 34,550,787 people in 2023. However, this growth was not evenly distributed across all cities. Some cities, such as Serang, Central Jakarta, and Tegal, experienced high growth, while others, like Tangerang and South Tangerang, saw a decline in population. (2) There were also changes in city classification based on population size. The number of metropolitan cities increased from 12 to 13, with East Jakarta becoming the most populous city in 2023. Although the average city population increased, the median population decreased, indicating an imbalance in population distribution across cities. Small and medium-sized cities showed significant growth potential, while larger cities tended to experience a slowdown. (3) Most cities in Java are located in the northern region, totaling 22 cities, while only 12 cities are located in the southern part. The majority of the population is also concentrated in the northern region. These findings indicate a strong concentration of population in major cities, particularly in the western and northern parts of Java. Therefore, equitable and regionally balanced development policies are needed to encourage the growth of small and medium-sized cities as new growth centers and to reduce the pressure on metropolitan areas.
