Abstract

The interest on literacy among Indonesian people is declining. This has become a social problem that needs to be addressed and considered not only in the educational environment but can also be increased by providing encouragement for interest in literacy in the public and social environment. In Islamic teachings, seeking knowledge is very important. The first word from Allah SWT received by the Prophet Muhammad SAW was "Read..", Islamic Architecture will be the main basis in designing a Literacy Center. The position of the human brain which is in the upper body and protected by skull and its function as a container of knowledge as the basis for the Metaphor Design for the Literacy Center. In achieving this goal, the design focuses on creating a Literacy Center which has a positive impact on increasing literacy with the Islamic Architecture Concept and Human Brain Metaphor Design approach. The output produced are (1) concept development plans for macro, messo and micro in building a strategy to facilitate the literacy of Surakarta City to become the next literacy city, (2) the Islamic Architecture Concept is applied to the concept on utility, firmitas and venustas in the design, (3) Metaphor Design of the unit and function of the Human Brain is presented in the zoning and philosophy of the building form.
