Abstract

This study aims to describe the usage patterns of the Simple Past Tense and to identify the types of errors made by international class students at SMA Batik 1 Surakarta in writing personal narrative essays. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with data in the form of personal narrative essays written by 23 eleventh-grade students. The analysis was conducted using the Surface Strategy Taxonomy proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982), which categorizes errors into four types: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The results revealed a total of 59 errors, consisting of 20 omissions (33.90%), 7 additions (11.86%), and 32 misformations (54.24%), with misformation being the most dominant error. These findings indicate that students struggle to recognize and correctly apply irregular verb forms in the context of the past tense. The results of this study are significant as a basis for developing more effective grammar teaching strategies, particularly in the use of the Simple Past Tense in narrative writing. Future research is recommended to explore the influence of first language transfer and to develop instructional media that support students in understanding grammatical structures within the context of real-life English usage.
