Abstract

Many students are able to write poetry well, pouring out their hearts with the right words, according to the mood and meaning they want to convey. However, some students experienced obstacles in creativity and mastering technical matters. This study aims to determine the ability to write student poetry with the theme of determined and liberated. This type of research is qualitative research with phenomenological research design. Data were analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and data analysis techniques. The object of this research is the results of writing poetry written by students of SMP Muhammadiyah 11 Rowosari with students of class VIII A as the subject. Based on the research that has been done, it is found that students are less able to explore creativity and are constrained when the theme is determined by the teacher, as seen in the diction and imagery that students use tend to be similar between one student and another. Meanwhile, students are more explorative in writing poetry when the theme of the poem is freed. It can be concluded that students' ability in writing with a freed theme is better than writing poetry with a determined theme.
