Abstract

This study aims to understand the form of gratitude experienced by mothers who have children with hearing impairments. The research subjects consisted of five mothers residing in Surakarta City and having children with hearing impairments. Informants were selected using purposive sampling technique based on specific criteria, such as being a married mother, having a child with hearing impairment, and residing in Surakarta City. This study employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological approach. Data collection techniques were conducted through semi-structured interviews. The data analysis process referred to Creswell's analysis model, and data validity was strengthened through member check technique. The research results show that gratitude in mothers with children with hearing impairments emerges in four main aspects according to McCullough's theory. Initially, the mothers experienced negative emotions such as sadness, shock, and disbelief, but over time, they began to accept their child's condition and see the positive side, which gave rise to feelings of gratitude. Gratitude was also influenced by social support from family and the surrounding environment, as well as the mothers' long-term hopes for their child's future. The conclusion of this study is that gratitude can improve psychological well-being and help mothers in carrying out their parenting role for children with hearing impairments. The implications of this study are expected to provide new understanding for the community and professionals about the importance of emotional and social support in improving the well-being of mothers with children with special needs.
