Abstract
Schools play a crucial role as centers for the learning process. They are specifically designed to guide students under the supervision of teachers. Schools serve as places where students grow, both academically and socially. However, the quality of education in schools does not solely depend on teachers and the curriculum. Various other factors contribute to the success of education, one of which is the school committee. The school committee plays an important role in decision-making and the supervision of school policies, particularly those related to improving educational quality. This study aims to describe the role and contribution that has been made by the school committee in improving the quality of education in SD Muhammadiyah Tegalgede and SD Aisyiyah Surya Ceria Karanganyar. This study also aims to analyze the challenges faced by the school committee in improving the quality of education in SD Muhammadiyah Tegalgede and SD Aisyiyah Surya Ceria Karanganyar. The paradigm of this research is a qualitative research with the type of field research. The approach used is a phenomenological approach. The definition of a phenomenological approach is an approach that reveals facts based on phenomena based on someone's experiences that have been experienced. In this study, the subjects of the study were parents/guardians of students, community leaders and experts at Muhammadiyah Tegalgede Karanganyar Elementary School and Aisyiyah Surya Ceria Karanganyar Elementary School. While the objects of the study were Muhammadiyah Tegalgede Karanganyar Elementary School and Aisyiyah Surya Ceria Karanganyar Elementary School. Data collection techniques in this study used observation, interview, and document study techniques. To check the validity of the data, a credibility test and a dependability test were used. This study used data analysis techniques by Miles and Huberman which consisted of data reduction, data display, and data verification (Conclusion Drawing/Verivication Data). The results of the study indicate that the school committee has carried out its four main roles, namely as an advisory agency, supporting agency, controlling agency, and mediator agency, effectively even though there are differences in emphasis in the two schools. The school committee has contributed to improving the quality of education in both schools. For example, at Muhammadiyah Elementary School Tegalgede, the school committee focuses more on strengthening discipline, infrastructure development, and monitoring budget use. Meanwhile, at Aisyiyah Surya Ceria Karanganyar Elementary School, the school committee emphasizes the integration of Islamic values, improving student and teacher welfare, and partnerships with external institutions. In carrying out its role as a school committee, there are several challenges faced, such as parental protests regarding tuition fees and dissatisfaction with services at Muhammadiyah Elementary School Tegalgede, as well as the lack of active parental participation and limited financial resources at Aisyiyah Surya Ceria Karanganyar Elementary School.
