Abstract

The prevalence of smokers in Indonesia has been increasing each year. Vaping is not only used by men but also by women, raising serious concerns regarding the various health risks associated with it. This study aims to explore the motivations of hijab- wearing female vapers in Surakarta. Utilizing a qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach, this research is grounded in Alfred Schutz's phenomenological theory, specifically the concepts of "because of motive" and "in order to motive." The findings indicate that the experiences and meanings attributed to being a hijab-wearing vaper differ among individuals. Firstly, the "because of motive" is predominantly influenced by peer environments, stemming from curiosity and experimentation. Secondly, the "in order to motive" reveals unique findings, including the desire to reduce sugar consumption and to appear trendy, as well as seeking sensations and alleviating stress. Participants openness in sharing their experiences reflects the open area (open self), while their tendency to hide such behaviors from their parents aligns with the hidden area of the Johari Window concept.
