Abstract
Alpha Generation Junior High School Students era are facing challenges in their social interactions. Social interaction in junior high school students is one of the important aspects of adolescent development in building identity and social skills. Various factors can influence the social interaction of junior high school students in the digital era, such as the intensity of social media usage and self-confidence. This study aims to examine the role of self-confidence as a mediator in the relationship between the intensity of social media use and social interaction in junior high school students. The study was conducted on 126 students of SMP Muhammadiyah Special Program Pracimantoro who were selected using stratified sampling technique. The research approach used a correlational quantitative method with a scale of intensity of social media use, a scale of self-confidence, and a scale of social interaction. The data analysis technique used was Boostrap Mediation Analysis with 1000 iterations. The results showed that self-confidence mediated the relationship between intensity of social media use and social interaction (B = 0.124; p = 0.046), while the direct relationship was not significant (B = 0.204; p = 0.061). Analysis of variable relationships shows that the intensity of social media use plays a positive role on self-confidence (B = 0.393; p = 0.030), self-confidence plays a positive role on social interaction (B = 0.316; p < 0.001), then the intensity of social media use and social interaction through self-confidence (B = 0.204; p < 0.061), so it can be concluded that the results are full mediation. This finding indicates that self-confidence is an important factor that bridges the influence of social media on social interaction in junior high school students. The implications of this study emphasize the important role of self-confidence in maintaining the quality of students' social interactions amid the increasing use of social media.
