Abstract

The new environment transfer experienced by Central Kalimantan students when continuing their education to university level in the first phase brought them a form of culture shock in terms of regional language differences which resulted in difficulties in interacting with dominant Javanese students at the Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. Central Kalimantan students must understand the use of Javanese by carrying out the process of learning Javanese to make it easier to adapt and adjust to their new place. This study aims to determine how Central Kalimantan students face obstacles in the process of learning Javanese at the Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. The research method used descriptive qualitative which was used to collect data from interviews, observations, and documentation. The results showed that Central Kalimantan students often asked friends for help to translate the meaning or conversation of Javanese, asked to use Indonesian, repeated Javanese words, interacted directly with dominant Javanese students, learned to understand Javanese from books, the internet, or listened to Javanese songs which were then translated on Youtube or Google. Central Kalimantan students accommodate into a form of convergence by adjusting their communication style like the dominant Javanese students by matching the accent and adding the prefix "i" where currently Central Kalimantan students are accustomed to using Javanese to interact with the dominant Javanese students at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta.
