Abstract

The high population density in certain regions of Indonesia is partly influenced by the distribution of migration incidents, which are concentrated in specific areas. Migration, in this context, is an important indicator of development success, particularly in terms of population distribution, which ultimately correlates with economic activities and regional development. This study aims to identify the factors that influence women's decisions to migrate. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) for 2015 and 2020 reveal that the highest migration rates in Indonesia’s are found on the island of Java, while the lowest migration rates are observed in the Maluku islands. Using panel data regression analysis across 34 provinces in Indonesia between 2015 and 2020, the results indicate that the Gender Development Index (GDI), poverty, the Human Development Index (HDI), the Provincial Minimum Wage (PMW), GDRP growth, formal sector workers, and informal sector workers simultaneusly affect female migration rates. Specifically, HDI and formal sector workers have a positive impact, while the GDI and PMW have a negative effect on female migration. Additionally, Poverty, GRDP growth, and informal sector workers were found to have no statistically significant impact on female migration in Indonesia.
