Abstract
The government always strives to create quality principals as evidenced by the existence of the Principal Development and Empowerment Institute or LPPKS, strengthening programs and even the most recent teacher movement program which is touted as the country's best program by providing leadership education for teachers to become learning leaders and equipping them with the ability to manage educational institutions or schools, on the other hand many private schools are threatened with a shortage of students and some have even closed. This study aims to describe the leadership style of the principal at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Karanganyar and SMA Muhammadiyah Darul Arqom Karanganyar, analyze the management of the quality of educational institutions in both schools, identify the advantages of the principal's leadership style, and evaluate its impact on achieving educational quality goals. In addition, this study also reveals the challenges or obstacles faced in managing the quality of education in both schools. The data collection technique in this study used observation, interview, and document study techniques. To check the validity of the data, a credibility test was used. This study uses data analysis techniques by Miles and Huberman which consist of data reduction, data presentation, and data verification. The results of the study indicate that both principals apply leadership styles that are appropriate to the needs of their respective schools. In SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Karanganyar, the leadership style applied includes democratic, transactional, and transformative, so that in managing the quality of educational institutions in the aspects of input, process and output, the focus is on IT-based academic innovation so as to produce high academic and non-academic achievements. The advantages of this leadership style are the creation of a participatory work atmosphere, there is always appreciation for achievement, and encouragement to innovate, even though there are challenges in maintaining facilities and infrastructure and mastering the curriculum. Meanwhile, in SMA Muhammadiyah Darul Arqom Karanganyar, the leadership style applied is charismatic and transactional, with a focus on pesantren-based education and memorizing the Qur'an. The output of education in this school also includes academic, non-academic achievements, and cadre formation of da'wah. The advantages of this principal's leadership style can be seen from his ability to inspire to improve the quality of learning and student achievement, despite challenges such as financial limitations and the use of technology.
