Abstract

Religious tourism is growing as part of the tourism activities in Indonesia, offering spiritual journeys and the quest for blessings for visitors. However, the image of religious tourism destinations is often disturbed by various social issues and controversial practices. This research aims to redefine the significance of New Gunung Kemukus, a religious tourism area located in Desa Pendem, Kabupaten Sragen, which has the potential to be redeveloped in an effort to improve its image. The use of waterfront design approach aims to explore new activities as an effort to narrow the ritual space. The historical background and current conditions of Gunung Kemukus, including the social changes and issues occurring in the area, will be analyzed. Furthermore, the waterfront design approach will be applied to identify potentials for developing new and innovative facilities that can enhance the appeal of religious tourism without compromising religious values and ethics. This research will also consider the expected positive impacts of religious tourism development economically, including increased Regional Original Revenue (PAD), job creation, and the preservation of local environment and culture.
