Abstract

Background: Cardiovascular fitness plays an essential role in adolescent health and can be measured through VO₂max. Sufficient physical activity is necessary to maintain and improve VO₂max; however, many adolescents tend to have low activity levels due to a sedentary lifestyle. Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between physical activity and VO₂max in adolescents, specifically the role of light and moderate-intensity physical activity in improving cardiovascular fitness. Methods: This study employs a cross-sectional design with a quantitative approach. The sample consists of 44 students from SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Surakarta, selected through purposive sampling. Physical activity was measured using the Godin-Shephard Leisure-Time Physical Activity Questionnaire, while VO₂max was assessed using the Cooper 12-minute run test. Data analysis was conducted using the Spearman test to identify the correlation between physical activity levels and VO₂max. Results: The majority of respondents exhibited light physical activity levels (56.8%) and VO₂max in the "very poor" category (95.5%). Correlation analysis indicated no significant relationship between low physical activity levels and VO₂max (r = -0.057, p = 0.787). Moderate-intensity physical activity showed a weak positive correlation with VO₂max (r = 0.379, p = 0.109), though it was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Light and moderate- intensity physical activity are not the primary factors in improving VO₂max in adolescents. Higher-intensity physical activity and a healthy lifestyle are necessary to enhance cardiovascular fitness.
