Abstract

Introduction: According to the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics (2023), the number of elderly people in Indonesia reached 22.6 million and is expected to continue to increase every year. This increase in the number of elderly people causes various complex physical problems, which have an impact on psychological problems, one of which is anxiety. Excessive anxiety can make it difficult for the elderly to cope with feelings and thoughts that they are not used to. Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of giving deep breathing exercise techniques on reducing anxiety in the elderly. Method: This study uses a quasi-experimental design with a pretest and posttest approach with control design. The research sample amounted to 40 people selected by purposive sampling technique. The instrument used to measure anxiety before and after the intervention was the Geriatric Anxiety Scale. The collected data were analyzed using Paired Sample T-test. Results: The results showed a significant effect of giving deep breathing exercise techniques on reducing anxiety in the elderly in the experimental group compared to the control group, with a p value of 0.000. Conclusion: There is a significant effect of giving deep breathing exercise in reducing anxiety in the elderly.
