Abstract

Background : Traumatic ulcer is a common condition that causes lesions in the oral mucosa. The healing process of this ulcer is often prolonged and causes discomfort. Natural ingredients such as green betel leaf, areca nut, and gambir are known for their wound healing and anti-inflammatory properties. The development of a mucoadhesive patch using extracts of these materials with a polymer formulation aims to enhance adhesion to the oral mucosa to accelerate the healing of traumatic ulcers. Method : The mucoadhesive patch was made using a combination of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC), Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose (Na-CMC), and Carbopol 940P polymers, along with ethanol extracts of green betel leaf, areca nut, and gambir. The adhesion test was conducted by attaching the patch to the mucosa of rats and measuring the adhesion time in a buffer solution with pH 6.8 at 37°C. Results : The research results showed that the formulation of the mucoadhesive patch with a combination of polymers and herbal extracts increased the adhesion strength of the patch to the oral mucosa. The formulation with the combination of HPMC, Na-CMC, and Carbopol 940P yielded optimal adhesion strength compared to formulations without Carbopol 940P. Conclusion : Mucoadhesive patches extract of green betel leaf, areca nut seeds and gambir with polymer formulation have significant results on the effect of the adhesive power of mucoadhesive patches.
