Abstract

The Korean drama Welcome to Samdal-ri is a serial drama with romance genre written by Kwon Hye-joo and directed by Cha Young-hoo. This drama talks about the life of Cho Sam-dal who returns to her hometown after her career was destroyed by scandal. Even though it is about romance, this Korean drama also talks about family drama and solving problems in social fields. The purpose of this study is to see how family communication is expressed by parents and childrens in the Korean drama Welcome to Samdal-ri. The type of research used is qualitative research using Roland Barthes’s semiotics and Fitzpatrick’s family communication analysis. There are 20 (twenty) scenes analyzed. The results of this study are divided into 4 (four) categories of family communication. First, consensual, is high orientation and conformity. Second, pluralistic, is high orientation, but low conformity. Third, protective, is low orientation, but high conformity. Fourth, laissez-faire, low orientation and conformity.
