Abstract

Early marriage is a major social development challenge in Indonesia, with significant impacts on children's education, health and well-being. Based on UNICEF data for 2023, Indonesia is ranked 4th in the world. This problem is influenced by various factors, including poverty, lack of access to education, cultural pressures and out-of-wedlock pregnancies. In this situation, Islamic religious education provides a foundation of values and ethics that can strengthen the role of parents in guiding children to delay marriage. Islamic religious education serves as a moral guideline that instills awareness about the importance of physical, emotional and spiritual readiness before marriage. This study aims to analyze the role of parents in Gonilan Village, Kartasura Subdistrict, Sukoharjo Regency, in preventing early marriage through the perspective of Islamic religious education, and identify the supporting and inhibiting factors. This research uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through interviews with parents and children in Gonilan Village, as well as through relevant documents. Data collection techniques included interviews, observation, and documentation. Data validity was tested using triangulation of techniques, sources, and time. Data analysis was conducted through three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that parents in Gonilan Village have an important role as the main educator in the family, parents have the responsibility to instill religious values and guide children to understand the consequences of early marriage. Parents also play a role in supervising children's social environment, limiting the use of technology to avoid negative influences, and being an example in living a life based on Islamic values. In addition, parents also play a role in building open communication with children and instilling financial independence as part of pre-marriage readiness. This is in line with the goal of Islamic religious education to create individuals who are faithful, pious, and able to live life with full responsibility in this world and the hereafter. The main factor supporting parents' role in preventing early marriage is awareness of the negative impact of early marriage. This understanding is further strengthened by parents' level of education and religious understanding gained from mosque and community recitation activities. Open communication between parents and children is also an important factor in creating mutual understanding, as well as giving children space to express their feelings and problems. Inhibiting factors in preventing early marriage include the negative influence of social media and an environment that is less supportive of religious values. Peers who exert negative influences can increase the risk of early marriage and the lack of communication between parents and children is a challenge in preventing early marriage.
