Abstract

Calcium hydroxide is the current gold standard root canal medicament used in endodontic treatment as an antimicrobial agent. One of the weaknesses of calcium hydroxide medicament is still limited in inhibiting the growth of Enterococcus Faecalis. Nano-hydroxyapatite has antibacterial ability. The addition of nano-hydroxyapatite with calcium hydroxide medicament can enhance the antibacterial synergy effect to be stronger, act to create a conducive environment and help the continuous release of antibacterial agents, thereby increasing bioavailability and prolonging bacterial inhibition. Objective: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of adding nano-hydroxyapatite to calcium hydroxide medicaments in inhibiting Enterococcus faecalis. Research Methods: This study was conducted true experimental laboratory with post-test only control group design. Antibacterial activity was evaluated using the well diffusion method with a width of 5mm and a depth of 5mm, according to the inclusion criteria of the study. The treatment groups involved calcium hydroxide medicaments with the addition of nano-hydroxyapatite at concentrations of 0.02%, 0.04%, 0.08%, 0.16%, and 0.32%. As a positive control, Ultracal XS calcium hydroxide medicament was used. Data were analyzed with One Way Anova test. Results: One Way Anova test showed a significance value <0.05 indicating a significant difference in the mean zone of inhibition in each treatment group. Post Hoc LSD test with a significance value <0.05 indicates a significant difference in the concentration of nano-hydroxyapatite addition to calcium hydroxide medicaments on the inhibition zone produced by Enterococcus faecalis. Conclusion: The addition of nano-hydroxyapatite to calcium hydroxide medicament with a concentration of 0.32% produces an average inhibition zone of 17.48 mm which is classified into strong category.
