Abstract

Scavengers are someone who scavenges or earns a living by scavenging used goods and utilizing used goods that are no longer suitable for use, because they do not have a goal to stay for a long time, scavengers are considered as non-permanent mobility actors. The origin of the scavengers is identified to find out where they come from, and then used as a reference to find out the social and economic characteristics of each origin area as well as the mobility of the scavengers. Waste is the residue of human activities or natural processes, whether solid or not, that is no longer used. Waste can come from various sources, including households, agriculture, offices, markets, and hospitals. Waste can be classified based on its nature, namely organic waste, which comes from living beings such as vegetable food scraps, leaves, and others, while inorganic waste is waste that can decompose and cannot be broken down, such as plastic waste, paper waste, cans, and others. The waste problem in Indonesia has become very serious; Indonesia is experiencing a waste emergency and is one of the countries that imports waste 2 from other countries, such as plastic waste and paper waste. The import of plastic waste is carried out by the Indonesian government to meet the needs of the recycling industry. This research aims to: (1) analyze the social and economic characteristics of scavengers at the Putri Cempo Landfill in Surakarta City. (2) analyze the mobility of scavengers at the Putri Cempo Landfill in Surakarta City. The research method used in this study is the survey research method, by observing and interviewing as well as asking several direct questions through questionnaires to scavengers. The results of this study show that the average age of scavengers is 44 years, with the majority being male (51%). Most scavengers were born in Karanganyar Regency (39%). The economic characteristics of the scavengers indicate an average income of Rp. 50,395 per day from scavenging, with average daily expenses of Rp. 41,118 and average monthly savings of Rp. 161,842. The mobility of the majority of scavengers (41%) involves walking, with the distance from the Putri Cempo landfill to the collectors' place to sell their goods averaging 3 km from the Putri Cempo landfill, while the daily mobility of the majority of scavengers (93%) involves going directly home.
