Abstract

Welding in the manufacturing industry which involves the use of steel and metals, especially in the field of development by utilizing the welding process, will be needed for various studies with the aim of obtaining high-quality welded joints. This study aims to determine the results of the microstructure of SMAW welding with currents of 100 and 110 A, to analyze the tensile strength and hardness of SMAW welding joints with currents of 100 and 110 A. In this study, the materials used are ASTM A36 low carbon steel with a thickness of 10 mm with no welding and welding of two materials with currents of 100 A and 110 A. Before welding, the manufacture of V with an angle of 70º using Nikko Steel RD-260 diameter electrodes 2.6 mm. The tests that will be carried out are metallographic testing using the ASTM E3 standard, tensile testing using the ASTM E8 standard and vickers hardness testing using the ASTM E384 standard. The results of the metallographic test can be found in the welding area producing graphite, ferrite and perlite phases, then in the HAZ region it is dominated by the perlite phase, while in the parent metal region it consists of graphite, ferrite and perlite phases. In the tensile strength test, the highest average tensile strength occurred without welding, which was 494.315 MPa, while the lowest average tensile strength value occurred at a welding current of 100 A, which was 404.6975 MPa. Meanwhile, in the micro vickers hardness test, the average hardness value in the welding area at the welding current of 100 A was obtained at 134.7 VHN. Then in the HAZ area, the violence increased to 140.5 VHN. Meanwhile, in the parent metal, the average hardness is 142.8 VHN. And for the average hardness value in the welding area at 110 A welding current is 1767.5 VHN. Then in the HAZ area, the violence increased to 180.43 VHN. Meanwhile, in the parent metal, the average hardness is 162,3 VHN.
