Abstract

Kartasura directly borders the City of Surakarta and serves as a key intersection point between the Surabaya-Solo-Yogyakarta and Solo-Semarang routes. The roads in the area around this intersection frequently experience congestion, especially during peak hours. This condition is caused by the use of road shoulders by private vehicle drivers for parking. The location is in close proximity to educational centers, offices, shops, businesses, and commercial areas. This study aims to analyze side frictions, traffic flow, and their impact on road performance around the Kartasura Four-Way Intersection. The data used include primary data, such as road geometry, side frictions, traffic volume, and travel time, as well as secondary data, such as population and location maps. The results show that the highest side friction occurs on the Ahmad Yani Road (West) in the morning, with a weighted frequency of 967.7 per hour, mainly due to market activities, schools, and illegal parking. The highest traffic volume was recorded at 2547.1 pcu/hour during the afternoon, with a maximum capacity of 3191.88 pcu/hour on Ahmad Yani Road (East). The average degree of saturation remains below 0.50, indicating that the road still operates within acceptable limits. Side friction is related to capacity, vehicle speed, and the degree of saturation. High friction can reduce vehicle speed by up to 27 km/h on roads with the highest friction levels.
