Abstract

One of the parameters that affect cutting using plasma cutting is the electric current. The electric current is a parameter that directly affects the cutting width, the speed of metal melting and the surface roughness due to the melting of the material. If the current used is higher, the temperature of the plasma arc will increase which makes the cutting width and the melting of the material more which can affect the roughness of the cutting surface. This study aims to determine the effect of electric current parameters on the cutting process of aluminum 1100 with CNC plasma cutting on the surface roughness and cutting width of the material. The electric current variation parameters used are 50, 55, and 60 Amperes. Surface roughness testing was carried out using the Mitutoyo SJ-210 Surface Roughness Tester when testing, the average data for the smoothest roughness was obtained at a variation of electric current of 50 Ampere with Ra 13.768 µm, Rq 17.024 µm, and Rz 69.762 μη, while for the coarsest roughness at a variation of electric current of 60 Ampere with Ra 16.413 µm, Rq 20.391 µm, and Rz 80.653 µm. In the kerf width measurement, an Isize 1205-200s caliper was used during testing. The average data obtained for the shortest cutting width at a current strength of 50 Ampere was 1.279 mm, while the widest cutting result at a current strength of 60 Ampere was 1.459 mm.
