Abstract
The seeds of srikaya (Annona squamosa L.) contain alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, tannins, polyphenolics, and RIP (Ribosome-Inactiviting Protein) that have potential antiviral activity. We tested the inhibition of ethyl acetate fraction of methanol extract of srikaya (Annona squamosa L.) seeds against newcastle disease virus as a model for viruses with genomes in the form of negative single-stranded RNA such as SARS-CoV2. Using embryonated chicken eggs as a virus growth medium and hemagglutination test, we found that the ethyl acetate fraction of methanol extract of cicada seeds, even at levels as low as 0.01 µg/mL had an inhibition of 99.21%. The positive control using a commercial antiviral drug (favipiravir) only inhibited 66.14%. The KLT separation of ethyl acetate fraction of methanol extract of srikaya seed indicated the dominance of alkaloid compounds. The results of this study indicate that alkaloid compounds obtained from the ethyl acetate fraction of methanol extract of srikaya seeds have antiviral effects against single-stranded negative RNA viruses.
