Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of variations in the shape of the in gate cross- section on shrinkage, density, hardness and microstructure. The research method used is investment casting, as well as conducting shrinkage, chemical composition, density, hardness and microstructure tests. There are several variations in the shape of the in gate cross-section, namely square, circle and triangle. The results of the chemical composition found chemical elements (Al) 97.18% as the main material, (Si) 0.735%, (Cu) 0.287%, and (Mg) 0.777% so that from the elements in the casting material including aluminum magnesium-silicon alloy (Al-Mg-Si). The results of the shrinkage test showed that the circular in gate had the lowest shrinkage value of 3.85%. The results of the density test showed that the circular in gate had the highest density value of 3.06 gr / cm3. The results of the microstructure observation showed that the circular in gate had grains that were evenly distributed between the square in gate and the triangular in gate. The results of the Vickers hardness test showed that the circular in gate had the highest hardness value of 65.1 VHN. The optimal in gate will affect the flow rate and the solidification process of the molten metal. The faster the molten metal affects the mold cavity, the faster the solidification process will be, and the higher the hardness value.
