Abstract

Investment casting is a method of making precision metal components using a pattern made of wax, then coated with liquid gypsum and alumina powder, then this model is heated so that the wax melts, forming a cavity for the casting. The descending channel functions to flow metal from the pouring cup to the inlet during the casting process. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of variations in the cross-sectional area of the down channel on shrinkage, density, hardness, microstructure and chemical composition in aluminum castings. In this research, the diameter of the descending channel will be studied, 14 mm2, 18 mm2, 22 mm2. The research results show that the highest average shrinkage results are found in the 14 mm down channel diameter at 4.81%, while the 18 mm2 down channel diameter is 3.47% and the down duct diameter at 22 mm is 2.57%. The highest density results were found on the 22 mm2 diameter sprue of 2.83 g/cm3 and the 18 mm2 diameter sprue of 2.75 g/cm3 and the lowest density value was obtained on the 14 mm2 diameter sprue of 2.68 g/cm3. The highest hardness value is found in the 22 mm2 diameter sprue at 74.2 VHN, while the 18 mm2 diameter sprue is 74.0 VHN and the 14 mm2 diameter sprue is 73.2 VHN. The results of the chemical composition analysis showed that the samples studied were dominated by the element Aluminum (Al) 97.18%. The presence of alloying elements such as silicon (Si) 0.735%, iron (Fe) 0.755%, copper (Cu) 0.287%, and magnesium (Mg) 0.777% in small amounts indicates that this sample is an aluminum alloy.
