Abstract

The controversy surrounding the interpretation of terms in the Quran is increasingly developing, giving rise to various studies and new interpretations. One of the focuses of this research is to analyze the meaning of "imtihan" which is often translated as "test" in the context of the Quran, using Toshihiko Izutsu's semantic method. This study employs library research techniques, analyzing sources such as tafsir books, journals, papers, and historical notes related to the theme. Semantic analysis is used to uncover the nuances of the meaning of “imtihan" in the context of the Quran and its relation to other concepts. This research focuses on the meaning of “imtihan” in various verses of the Quran, as well as its relationship with classical and contemporary interpretations. This study seeks to answer whether the general understanding of “imtihan” as a test encompasses all aspects of its meaning in the Quran, and how this concept relates to worldviews. (weltanschauung) The research findings show that the meaning of “imtihan” in the Quran is more complex than merely "test." Semantic analysis reveals a network of meanings involving related concepts such as bala, fitnah, and musibah, as well as their connection to positive concepts like rahmat and farah. This research also found that the understanding of “imtihan” has significant implications for the Islamic worldview regarding the relationship between humans and Allah.
