Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of variations in the location of the inlet channel on shrinkage, density, hardness, and microstructure. The research method used is investment casting with variations in the location of the inlet on the product, and testing shrinkage, density, hardness, and microstructure. There are several variations in the location of the inlet channel, namely at the top, middle and bottom of the product. The results showed that the location of the inlet at the top of the product has a shrinkage value of 0.87 %, while the variation in the middle of the product is 1.25% and the variation at the bottom of the product is 2.09%. The density test results showed the highest value in the variation of the location of the inlet at the top of the product at 3.04 g/cm3 and the variation of the location of the inlet in the middle at 2.96 g/cm3, and the lowest density value was obtained in the variation of the location of the inlet at the bottom of the product at 2.97 g/cm3. In the hardness test, the results obtained were 74.0 VHN in the upper variation of the product, 60.8 VHN in the middle variation of the product, and 54.2 VHN in the lower variation of the product. The results of microstructure testing found Al-Mg Si alloy elements in each variation of the location of the inlet which plays a role in increasing the strength of aluminum material. From the results of chemical composition testing there are 22 elements, there are 5 elements that affect aluminum, namely elements such as Silicon (Si) 0.735%, Iron (Fe) 0.755%, Copper (Cu) 0.287%, and Magnesium (Mg) 0.777%.
